Netflix Expands Gaming Test to More Devices Amidst Continued Expansion

Netflix is ramping up its efforts to make a stronger mark in the gaming industry by extending its game testing to a wider range of devices, including TVs and computers. The streaming giant announced on Monday that it has begun to cloud-stream selected games for a 'limited number' of subscribers in the US and Canada. The test phase also includes plans to launch on PCs and Macs in the upcoming weeks.

The tests currently cover two games; Oxenfree by Night School Studios and Molehew's Mining Adventure, with the innovative concept of using smartphones as the game controller. A few weeks ago, Netflix unintentionally revealed their new game controller app on the Apple App Store, sparking speculation regarding Netflix Games' expansion to TV support.

Netflix Games' VP, Mike Verdu, shared in a blog post that the company has been focused on enhancing the gaming experience ever since it added mobile games to the platform in 2021. He stated, “Our goal has always been to have a game for everyone, and we are working hard to meet members where they are with an accessible, smooth, and ubiquitous service.” He further announced that the company was taking the initial step to make games playable on all devices where Netflix is enjoyed - TVs, computers, and mobile.

Following a thorough crackdown on password sharing, Netflix is aiming to enhance its member experience by offering free games as an added value. In 2021, the company also shared its plans to venture into cloud gaming, affirming that it does not aim to compete with industry giants like PlayStation or Xbox.

Netflix's move to expand its gaming horizon marks a significant step in its ongoing journey to become a multi-platform entertainment service. While it's too early to predict the overall impact on the gaming industry, the initial signs promise an exciting future for Netflix subscribers who enjoy gaming.
