A decentralized social network Mastodon offers an official app for iOS now. This platform is available for a wide range of operating systems like Android, Windows Mobile, and SailfishOS. A web version also exists and works quite similarly to Twitter. Mastodon also launched third-party apps for iOS earlier.

This new application for Apple devices has almost all the features of the core version. However, it doesn’t include the local and federated timelines. So, it means that content won’t be sorted by the location where people post it. If you want to try out this function, you can go to the web version and log in to the same account as you have in your mobile version.

This social network differs from Twitter by independently built communities, which the users can create or join to. It’s not a standard single central network. The new application for iOS was designed to encourage people to try Mastodon for communication. It has some unique features that allow you to adjust the privacy, hide spoilers, or adult content.

Also, in the core version, you get chronological posts without ads. There are several other filters that allow you to sort sensitive content. The app for iOS might lack some of them, but it still saves the main idea of Mastodon social networks that strives to connect people with similar interests.

The reason why the federated or local timelines are excluded from the application is the intention to avoid conflict with Apple. Some information about using this app nearby might be better not to share. Although there are some limitations in the new Mastodon version, you may still use the existing ones for iOS or try the web version to enjoy some more features. A similar Mastodon tool might appear on Android, but the exact time is still unknown.
